How do we Save Food?

Low Waste | Low Carbon Footprint | Local Network

Established in 2009, Food Grace is the first food recycling organization in Hong Kong. Food Grace follows the ideas of "Low waste, Low Carbon Footprint and Local Network” when performing waste reduction work. We serve as a platform and link the society, industries and manufactures and recycle the leftovers produced by the society and industries and donate to the minority groups and families in need, helping to build a eat wise and helpful society. Food Grace also organizes different creative educational activities, workshops and food wise activities in order to promote waste reduction and achieve low carbon lifestyle in the Community.

Now there are three food recycling centers located in Tai Po, Yuen Long and Kwai Ching and they mainly serve Tai Po, Yuen Long, Kwai Chung and the nearby. Also, we serve the grassroots in Sham Shui Po, Wong Tai Sin, Kwun Tong, Mid-West District, Southern District and Wai Chai through volunteers. Up to April of 2015, Food Grace has recycled over 370 tonnes of food and redistributed them to the families in need. The number of beneficiaries is around 7 hundred thousand.

Low Waste

Food Grace's food collection teams collect unwanted fresh vegetables and fruits from street markets in Tai Po, Tsuen Wan and Yuen Long every Monday to Friday. We also accept unwanted dried food, packaged food and bread from food manufacturers, distributors and retailers to directly reduce waste and help relieve the burden on the landfills.
Upon passing satisfactory standards assessment and categorization, fresh vegetables and fruits, dried food and packaged food are then redistributed to the needy such as: low-income families, Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) beneficiaries, the unemployed, the disabled and grass-root elderly as a way of alleviating some of the financial pressures caused by the cost of food. Some of the food is also used to prepare lunchboxes, which are sold at a low price to the unemployed trainees in our training centres.
Leftovers and inedible food are sent to organic farms for composting. The fertilizers will return to the earth when they are ripe, Achieving the idea of "recycling and zero landfilling".

Low Carbon Footprints

We insist to handle the leftovers with the idea of "where we collect the leftovers, where we distribute them”, trying our best to lower the carbon emission and protect the environment. At the same time, we organises various creative public educational activities, such as the food recycling study trips, companies green training activity, handling leftovers workshops and Eat wise talks, promoting the living style of food treasuring and low carbon footprint. Also, promote the "Treasuring the food for all” activity with continuously education and hope to change the consumption practice nowadays and achieve reduce waste at source.

Local Network

Stationing in a community, use the power of the whole community to participate the work of low waste together. We redistributed the excess food from the industries to the people in need and over 100 organisations within the community. Moreover, we build up a beneficiary’s network "Friends of Food Grace”, considering the people who accept our food donation as Food Grace Low waste friends, and organises varies environmental protecting educational activities. We will also hire the grass-roots in the community to join our food collection teams, creating green employment and at the same time, we motivate different volunteers to join the food recycling in that district, building a eat wise and helpful society.
